Doctor, Doctor, Gimme The News, 1/1

Title: Doctor, Doctor, Gimme The News

Fandom: Supernatural

Pairing: Alwaysagirl!Sam/Gabriel, background Alwaysagirl!Dean/Cas, terrible, vague, theoretical Dean/Gabriel

Summary: ""Do I know you?" Sam asks, glancing down at Gabriel through thick, glossy brown bangs. Gabriel spares half a second to feel sorry for Sam, because she's actually- abstractly- very pretty. Heart-shaped face, delicate eyebrows knitting over bright hazel eyes, vaguely Amazonian figure. But it can't be easy being the little sister of like, Wonder Woman."

Length: 2200 wordsish.

Warnings: Paging Dr. Sexy to the ER.

Notes: So, again, plumbing the depths of the drafts folder, it seems like everything has some weird genderbending, or is part of something largely unfinished, so. Instead, a terrible medical au. Merry Christmas. Early Rosh Hashanah. Something. (I should be atoning for this shit.)

Gabriel is attracted to people who are ruthlessly competent, kind of slutty, with a mean streak and green eyes.

So, all things considered, it's not really a surprise that Deanna Winchester sets off all his bells and whistles like Friday Fight Night in Vegas. He's a good trauma surgeon- he has a freaking gift and he does know how to be serious- but one of the biggest perks of working in an ER is ogling the EMTs- it's like... a God-given right. So when Deanna had blown in, all curves under practical slacks and terrible short sleeved button down, he'd zeroed in like Top Gun and thought there was the rest of his life, settled. He'd noted her partner- spared a second to think that she must have legs that went for miles- before slipping over her "aw, shucks" shoulders and slightly dipped head.

The fact that Sam is Deanna's sister is interesting, though. Very interesting.

Which is why he finds himself throwing on his most ingratiating smile and forcibly going cutsies to smoothly slip his five in, snagging a candy bar off the shelf.

"I've got her coffee, Robin," Gabriel says cheerfully, turning a bit of his smile her way, too. Robin held the key to the largest pieces of cake, after all. Sugar was a necessary component of Gabriel's success.

"Do I know you?" Sam asks, glancing down at Gabriel through thick, glossy brown bangs. Gabriel spares half a second to feel sorry for Sam, because she's actually- abstractly- very pretty. Heart-shaped face, delicate eyebrows knitting over bright hazel eyes, vaguely Amazonian figure. But it can't be easy being the little sister of like, Wonder Woman. Gabriel extends the candy-free hand.

"Hi, Dr. Gabriel Bright. I'm a surgeon in the ER," he says, tipping his head toward his favorite whirling chaos of screaming, crying and bodily fluids. "You're Sam, right? Sam Winchester?" Gabriel had cornered Chuck in the bathroom until he'd spilled all the details he knew- the Winchester sisters had been EMTs for years, they were very good at their jobs and Deanna was a ballbuster of the highest order. Gabriel was already imagining their spiteful, wonderful children. Sam gives him a sort of suspicious once-over, but nods.

"Honey, just let the doctor buy you coffee. He's a damn old dog," Robin advises. Gabriel pouts at her, gratified when her cheeks color a little, even as she rolls her eyes. Sam finally shrugs.

"Okay, thanks," she says, walking- crap, walking away.

"You were no help," he hisses at Robin, who just cackles as Gabriel chases after Sam. "Hey, wait!" Sam snorts.

"Let me guess," she muses, aforementioned long legs carrying her determinedly faster than Gabriel's usual saunter. "You're madly in love with my sister. You're going to gain my approval and get advice on how to woo her." Sam pauses to stare down at Gabriel.

"Am I right?" Sam asks, hand resting on her hip. Gabriel frowns.

"I would never use the word "woo,"" Gabriel argues. Sam rolls her eyes, huffs a low little laugh and walks off.

"Well, damn," Gabriel says, staring after Sam with something like respect.

Of course, she loses all that respect three days later when he sees her sitting close with Castiel. Castiel is his cousin- somehow, distantly- and where Gabriel is sunshine and cheerful irreverence, Castiel is like a raincloud- dark hair and blue eyes. It figures that Sam is Castiel's type- she seems like a girl who really over identifies with the witty and put-upon heroes of Austen and Bronte, looking for a brooding hero to sweep her off her feet. Gabriel wouldn't say Cas is the sweeping type- he's more the type to sit in the back of the bar, nursing his single beer, completely oblivious to the women swarming the adjacent tables. He watches as Sam laughs her way through something, her ponytail swinging prettily behind her as she shakes her head.

They do make a nice picture together- Cas is just tall enough to suit her and he cracks that half-a-smile that the interns sigh over twice before Sam sends him off with a pat to the back.

"You're never going to get him that way," Gabriel sing-songs, insinuating himself next to her. Now that he knows what she wants, his plan isn't derailed so much as diverted- how could Sam deny the provider of her future happiness such a little thing as her sister's number? Sam stares at him for a long moment, like he's an unwanted dinner guest, before she laughs.

"Oh? And you think you know the way to Cas's heart?" Sam says, a hint of some irrepressible amusement on her face. Gabriel has to admit, she's a lot hotter than he remembered her being. But he just shrugs expansively.

"He's my cousin. And let me tell you, you're going to have to beat him over the head with it. He's a little shy with women." Gabriel whispers. Sam raises her eyebrows.

"I take it that's a problem you don't share," she drops dryly. Gabriel grins, gesturing in a sort of I am what I am arm wave.

"Not so much. I'm pretty direct," he agrees. Sam laughs, and Gabriel is momentarily distracted by the long column of her neck, as her head actually tips back.

"Right, which is why you're still trying to butter me up with dating advice, rather than talking to my sister, who is less than three rooms away," Sam points out, and well, she may have a point.

"Well, I'm direct about my subterfuge," Gabriel admits with a wry curl of his mouth.

"Look, Dr. Bright, this Ten Things I Hate About You plan is adorable, don't get me wrong, but you really don't have a shot with her," Sam says with a genial pat to his knee. There's a hint of real softness under the teasing that- Christ, she feels bad for him. "I'm sure you're a... great guy. But you're not her type." Gabriel laughs.

"Sweetheart, I'm everyone's type. I'm rich, smart, fun and really astounding in the sack," Gabriel assures her. Sam just laughs again.

"Modest, too," she chokes out. "But when she burns you- bad- don't say I never told you so." Sam grins and hops down from the counter, waving behind her as she goes. Gabriel noticed she has dimples.

"I enjoy a challenge," Gabriel reminds himself.

It's hard to remember, though, when Deanna is staring at him like he has five heads and one of them is speaking in Swahili.

"I'm seeing someone," she says blankly, which is such total bullshit, Chuck said she was single. "Plus, I don't know you." Deanna sort of walks away after that, like she brushes off five guys an hour, which- facing facts- she probably does.

He's still sitting in the cafeteria, sort of boggled, when a steaming cup of coffee presents itself in front of him.

"Robin said to add sugar to it until it wouldn't dissolve anymore," Sam says by way of greeting, smiling, but there's a rueful twist of her mouth under it.

"She just walked off," Gabriel muses, mechanically drinking the coffee which is- oddly- perfect. Sam rolls her eyes.

"I did warn you," Sam says gently.

"Is she really seeing someone?" Gabriel asks, almost bitterly, because he's never gotten that one before, but he's heard about it from other guys. Sam's shrug- the shrug of someone probably boning his cousin- is loose.

"She will be. Dee's known for sealing the deal, shall we say?" Sam replies, her hair coming loose from its practical ponytail in little wisps. He thinks absently that it'd probably be pretty, if she wore it down. "Thanks for the advice, by the way." Gabriel snorts.

"So I take it I can expect an invitation to the wedding? Congratulations, your children will be very tall." Gabriel's aware his pettiness is unwarranted- she did try to help him, in a way, after all. Sam gives him this terrible pitying look.

"I'm not dating Cas," Sam says slowly. Gabriel frowns.

"Wait, what- you said-" Gabriel starts. "You said "thanks for the advice," I thought- you're not dating Castiel?" Sam laughs, which- but- she's an Austen girl.

"Gabriel, Dee likes Cas. I was telling him to ask her out when you came up," Sam says, patting Gabriel's suddenly limp hands.

"God, hoisted by my own petard," Gabriel mutters.

"Like I said," Sam repeats. "You're not her type." Gabriel lets his head slump against the table. Sam pats his shoulder once, twice and then is gone.

He tries to put the whole thing out of his mind- although it feels like he sees Deanna's dark blond head nestled close to Cas's dark hair every time he turns a corner. Gabriel sleeps his way through half a class of interns, in a truly righteous funk and even the sympathetic pieces of Black Forest cake aren't helping.

"This is really kind of sad," Sam says, slipping into the chair across from him. She's in a pair of tight jeans and a kind of terrible pink floral cowgirl shirt and well- Gabriel was right about her hair. It's sort of wavy and really pretty and okay, he must be in a slump if he's sitting here thinking about how pretty Sam Winchester's hair is. "You're going to make yourself hyperglycemic."

"You don't know my life," Gabriel mutters hatefully. Stupid pretty Winchesters. "Is your sister still blissfully happy with Castiel? Wait, don't answer that, I'm not a good enough person to hear "yes."" Sam sighs.

"Is your shift over?" she asks him, casting a wary eye toward his scrubs and lab coat. Gabriel nods, hesitantly. "Alright, then. I'm taking you for a drink. This is just... sad." Gabriel gives her the stink eye.

"I don't need your pity alcohol." he frowns, crossing his arms. "But I'll take it, who am I kidding." Sam slaps him on the back, cheerfully.

"That's the spirit, Gabriel. Go get changed." she instructs, pulling him up and pushing him toward the locker rooms. Gabriel is sort of wondering what the fuck he's doing here, but finds himself slipping out of his scrubs and into jeans and a beaten up tee shirt. Sam is dragging him out until, in one of those I-thought-this-only-happened-on-Grey's-Anatomy moments that seem to abound at the hospital, there's a huge, firey car wreck right in front of them. Doctors and nurses start clamoring, getting stretchers, but Gabriel and Sam are closer, and because they're idiots, into the fray they go.

Gabriel loses track of Sam for a good fifteen minutes- there are four cars and maybe 12 patients and a stream of nurses, doctors, EMTs and finally firemen helping to move everyone to safety. When they roll the last patient away from him, still barking orders, in the mouth of the ER, Gabriel catches a glimpse of her. Sam's hair is pulled to the side in a quick knot, purple latex gloves smudged with blood, carefully angled away from her face as she uses the back of her wrist to brush a loose strand away, just smearing her cheekbone with soot instead. The knees of her jeans are stained with gutter mud, as are the elbows of her shirt- she looks like ten types of fierce practicality, shoulders squared as she strips off the gloves and drops them into a biohazard container.

Incidentally, she's extremely hot.

Sam finally notices he's staring at her and frowns at him, mouthing "what?" clearly. He crosses the room toward her.

"You're kind of gorgeous, you know," Gabriel says, mouth on auto-pilot. Sam's eyebrows fly up and her mouth opens, but nothing comes out for a long moment.

"Then maybe you should buy me a drink," Sam finally says, and really, she's got an awful lot of dark eyelashes, and well, hazel is pretty nice, too.

"I could do that," Gabriel agrees, sticking his probably equally filthy arm out. Sam just laughs, really laughs, her head thrown back and Gabriel has always sort of liked her neck. It's a very hickey-worthy neck. She tugs off his gloves- he'd forgotten he had them on- and dumps them into the trash.

"I don't really do chivalry," she admits, tugging Gabriel close, slipping her fingers into his belt loops. "But it does mean I put out on the first date." Gabriel's mind goes completely blank with possibility for a moment before rebooting, slowly.

"I bought you coffee three weeks ago, does that count?" he tries, more just to see what she'll do than anything else. Sam smiles and laughs, low and dirty.

"You could come with me to my place and find out," she says, and holy shit, he really read her all wrong, didn't he?

"Isn't this a little fast?" he asks, in a sublime act of stupidity. Sam just raises her eyebrows, a smug smile on her mouth. Gabriel strongly suspects Sam could really be a little bitch- which, God, is such a turn-on.

"No," she says simply. "You're kind of my type." Gabriel blinks up at her. "What, you thought I was helping Cas get Dee just out of the goodness of my heart? Well, yes, but, no, too." Sam leans down to kiss Gabriel, hot and wet, and good- but strangely sweet.

"Are you coming?" Sam asks, a shadow of doubt flickering over her features.

"We'll have to find out," Gabriel says, impulsive and a little overwhelmed. Sam makes a face, like she knows she left herself wide open for that, but just laughs again.

Gabriel thinks he might be in love.
