I think Dean instinctively undervalues what he can do, despite bragging about it, and overvalues anything he can't do. If Sam can bond with Cas over obscure knowledge, and Cas is pleased with Sam's endless curiosity, then Sam and Cas must now recognize that Dean is lacking and that they themselves are MFEO. If Sam and Cas had been bonding over unarmed combat techniques, Dean might have been able to keep it in proportion.
And I'm always delighted when Dean/Cas fic does justice to Sam's attractions.
